Chester has been welcoming visitors from the USA for hundreds of years including celebrated author, Henry James who came here on many occasions and wrote about its great heritage in ‘The Ambassadors’ . Another famous writer from the USA was Washington Irving, who penned ‘The Legend of Sleepy Hollow’ and ‘Rip Van Winkle’ and wrote about his visit to Chester. The city also has connections with the Yale family who founded the famous Ivy League university stateside, and during World War II welcomed many GI’s ahead of the D-Day landings.
Readers of newspaper USA Today voted Chester their favourite place to visit in Britain in 2013. No wonder Bank of America chose the city as the base for its European headquarters many years before.
Nowadays hundreds of cruise ships visiting the port of Liverpool offer popular shore excursions to Chester.
Chester’s American associations can be incorporated into a History Hunter tour.
